Asidefromaday: Chasing shadows

20/12/13  ||  gk

France’s Asidefromaday have been surprisingly quiet since their last album all the way back in 2009. New album, “Chasing shadows” continues in the same direction of the previous album with the sound staying in the post-metal/ sludge vein but the songs have gotten a lot better. There are some cool dynamics at play here and the band shifts from soft to loud in a very pleasing manner. Still, most of this is predictable stuff in a genre that has just about exploded in the last few years. Black sun is the probably the best song here with its hard, caustic approach and there isn’t anything here that is actively bad. It’s just that after a while, all the songs start to sound the same. Still, fans of early Mastodon and bands of that ilk should find plenty to like here.

6,5/10: some more sludgy, post-whatever heavy rock.
